A 206' long wooden-hulled steamer that was transporting 510 US Navy recruits, headed toward Mobile, Alabama, ran aground 3 October 1864 and became a total loss. The wreck consists of two large peices, separated by ~100 yards in 18' of water. While most of the wreck lies under the sand, the large coral encrusted section rises up 5' from the bottom. Brass spikes, china plate shards, and other artifacts have been recovered here, including large lead bars engraved with "SAN ANDRES." The bars have been found close to this high section. As she is only ~100 yards offshore, surge and low visibility are frequently encountered.
