SHIPWRECKS OF THE SUNSHINE STATE!
A Honduran
freighter, the Baja California was built in 1914 in
Sutherland, England. She boasted a length of 266' and a beam of
38'. Owned by Mayan S.S. Corporation, she was en route to Key
West from New Orleans carrying a general cargo when a torpedo
from U-84 struck the ship. She eventually sunk in 115' of
water.
She sits upright with large intact sections, though canted to
port. Part of her cargo consisted of numerous bottles which can
now be found throughout the wreck site. Heavily encrusted, she is
home to many large jewfish. During the late summer, jewfish
aggregations with upwards of 100 individuals can be found here.
Due to her distance offshore, the wreck also has good artifact
potential.
