The final resting spot of the Doxie Girl, a commercial
fishing boat, is offshore the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay sitting
upright in 65' of water. Owned by Bob Doxie, of the Long Island
Sea Clam Corporation out of Long Island, New York, at the time
the vessel was leased to Bruce Iverson of Oyster, Virginia. The Doxie
Girl sunk in a storm the evening of Sunday, 16 March, 1975.
Four of the crew perished in the accident, including Captain
Iverson and two employees of Bob Doxie, who is emotional to this
day over the loss.
The wreck is intact and provides lots of relief. Similar to the Gulf
Hustler, though instead of being covered in a layer of
mussels the Girl is covered by a thick brown algae growth.
There is netting wrapped around the bronze prop, which is half
buried. Large tautog and black sea bass are abundant here due to
the lack of visiting divers.
