Making her first run as a blockade runner for the Confederacy, though flying a British flag, the 210' long screw steamer Modern Greece was chased ashore by the USS Cambridge approximately 1/3 mile north of Fort Fisher, North Carolina. At the time, she had a cargo of Enfield rifles, liquor, gunpowder, clothing, much of which was salvaged by the Confederates on shore. In fact, the liquor that was rescued kept the troops at Fort Fisher "in high spirits" for more than a week. Also salvaged was the personal effects of the passengers, the engine and other machinery, and 6 Whitworth cannon. The wreck rests in 30' of water ~300 yards from shore, heavily encrusted, with her large steel screw dominant on the site. Many artifacts have been recovered by divers over the years, though it should be noted that this site is now protected by the state of North Carolina.
