The 470' long former whaling vessel Lancing provided a
slow, lumbering, and easy target for the U-552 as they
slammed a torpedo into her starboard side. Carrying fuel oil on
this cruise, she succumbed to the damage and rolled as she sank,
coming to rest inverted in 160' of water. Her huge bronze
propeller is still present on the turtled hull. Divers can
descend to the sand level and then swim "into" the hulk
to find many ornate portholes still attached to the bulkheads.
